The war in Iraq, easily the largest foreign policy blunder of modern American history, does not lie solely on the shoulders of George W. Bush. The blame also falls on Congress — leaders who could have stood in opposition, but instead, endorsed the bloodshed.

Right now, we stand on the precipice of repeating that blunder. Donald Trump, with zero congressional authorization, ordered a strike that killed a high-ranking Iranian official.

Now, let me be clear — the leader that was killed was not a good man. But that’s not the point. The issue is that this act of war virtually guarantees an escalation, and an escalation that will then be used by this administration to justify even further conflict. We’re not just looking at the potential of a spiral — we’re already in it.

No War with Iran

Let me be very clear: when Congress took out the NDAA amendment that would have prevented this strike three weeks ago, and when we refused to pass Rep. Barbara Lee’s repeal of the AUMF, we enabled this strike. We greenlit this escalation.

At some point, we have to do more than simply extol the virtues of ending our endless wars. We must vote to take back the powers of war that were constitually given to Congress, not the President.

Otherwise, we are doomed to repeat the mistakes of the past.

In solidarity,

Rep. Ro Khanna
