Farmers are feeling the pain of climate change more than anyone. Across the country, droughts, heavy rainfall, and flooding are destroying crops and making it difficult for producers to get by. That’s why SEEC members are fighting tooth and nail to ensure next year’s Farm Bill is as green as possible so that farmers have the tools they need to withstand the climate crisis.
John,
Farmers are feeling the pain of climate change more than anyone.
Yesterday, the Co-Chairs of SEEC’s Climate and Agriculture Task Force, Rep. Chellie Pingree, and Rep. Kim Schrier, released a new report outlining policy recommendations for how we can best advance climate-friendly agriculture in the next Farm Bill.
These recommendations cover a wide range of issues affecting our farmers, including food waste, electrification, climate resilience, and more. But John, Farm Bill reauthorizations only happen once every five years. That means we have one shot at getting pro-climate policy included in this legislation until 2028.
John, we can’t let this opportunity slip by. Estimates show that agriculture produced 11% of US greenhouse gas emissions in 2020. If we get these recommendations included into the final Farm Bill, we not only have a real chance to provide much-needed support to farmers on the frontlines of climate change but also to tackle one of the biggest sources of pollution.
Thanks to your help in 2020, SEEC PAC was able to re-elect over 95% of our pro-environment members to the U.S. House of Representatives — defying the odds on a night where Democrats lost seats. Now we are counting on you to help our SEEC members pass climate, clean energy and environmental justice policies in the 117th Congress while we undo the damage of the Trump Administration.
