Author Benjamin Danielson, a practicing pediatrician, writes that, "in health care and other settings, poverty is racialized, [and] biases are deeply embedded in policies and practices."
He recounts a situation when these biases and medical practices led to a hospital nearly calling Child Protective
Services about the parent of a young Black patient—a choice that could have seriously harmed the health and well-being of an entire family.
Danielson writes that stories like his patients’ are not unique. "Racism affects every aspect of the health care system, in policies and daily practices, and it harms people," he writes.
Danielson suggests that primary care pediatrics is uniquely positioned to address racism and ultimately transform child health care to go beyond a medical care focus in prioritizing health and well-being.
