John...yes, this is a real headline:
What's more ridiculous…that the date chosen for the Senate runoffs this year just happened to fall on a date that would compromise voting…or the fact that the holiday commemorates a former confederate soldier that fought against the abolition of slavery?!
Yeah…while this is complete bull💩, we've seen it in many forms. It's just another way to discourage voters from keeping the first Black Senator of Georgia in office, and a way to get a MAGA Minion, Trump-backed Republican elected. And even if the state holiday wasn't there, early voting still wouldn't happen that day due to Thanksgiving – which of course, is no coincidence at all.
They want to stop us from voting so bad…well John, not on our watch! While the law prohibits in-person early voting on Saturdays if a holiday is within two days beforehand,
county governments have the option to offer up to three more early voting days starting the day after the results of the initial election are certified, potentially on the Tuesday and Wednesday before Thanksgiving, and the Sunday afterward.
Right now, the state holiday prohibits early voting the weekend before Election Day. It's on us to make sure that voters have as much time to early vote as possible. Sign the petition and demand Georgia county governments across the state expand early voting by a maximum of 3 days.
The runoff election is under 3 weeks away. That is NOT a long time to rally voters for a SECOND time around during what becomes a busy holiday season for many.
That's why it is so critical that we push local governments in Georgia to extend early voting.
In love and solidarity,
