Black is beautiful and so is our hair.
I was thrilled to sit down with Tracee Ellis Ross on the new, powerful docuseries, The Hair Tales, to share my personal hair journey, discuss the politics of hair, and lift up our fight to ban race-based hair discrimination with my legislation, the CROWN Act.
Black women’s hair has always been political, and it continues to be unjustly discriminated against. And in many states, that discrimination is still legal.
From employment handbooks to school policies, afros, locs, twists, and other hairstyles have been codified as proxies for Black skin. And these racist dress codes and hair policies have created illogical, unjust, and harmful barriers to education and employment.
By passing the CROWN Act, we will ban discrimination based on hair textures and hairstyles that are commonly associated with a particular race or national origin.
