This week, the Supreme Court issued a 7-2 decision allowing the January 6 Committee to examine the cellphone records of Kelli Ward — the chairman of the Republican Party of Arizona during the 2020 election. And you’ll never guess who was in the dissent…
If you guessed Clarence Thomas, unfortunately, you would be right.
Once again, Thomas has used his position on the Supreme Court to attempt to obstruct the essential work of the Jan. 6 Committee.
The American people should not have to worry about the impartiality of the highest Court in the land. It’s past time for Congress to open an investigation into Clarence Thomas’ misconduct.
We have a Republican majority that is corrupting the Court, but no justice moreso than Clarence Thomas. He has been the Supreme Court’s most consistent vote to block the public from knowing more about the insurrection — and it should not come as a surprise, since his wife:
-
Attended the Jan. 6 “Stop the Steal” Rally
-
Personally pushed Trump’s Chief of Staff, Mark Meadows, to overturn the election
-
Contacted lawmakers in Arizona and Wisconsin to overturn the results in their states for Trump
-
Told the Jan. 6 Committee that she still believes the 2020 election was stolen
Listen, I know we said we wouldn’t make wild promises about how easy it will be to hold Thomas accountable — and I want to be clear that this will not be easy.
But when a government official violates the public trust and makes a mockery of our institutions as Clarence Thomas has, it’s important to say there should be accountability. To stand up and say that this isn’t acceptable.
It was important when Donald Trump incited a deadly insurrection, and it’s important today, as Clarence Thomas repeatedly refuses to recuse himself from cases relating to the insurrection — even though his wife actively participated in efforts to overturn the 2020 election.
Given that Thomas is still trying to muddy the waters around the insurrection and block the Jan. 6 Committee's efforts towards transparency, he is clearly unfit to serve on the nation’s highest Court. And it is the responsibility of Congress — as a co-equal branch of government — to hold him to account.
It’s time to take a stand, and to say loud and clear that it is unacceptable for a Supreme Court justice to behave so unethically for so long.
Help us turn up the pressure on Clarence Thomas.
Thanks for being a part of this,
