Five years after we called on the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to strengthen its water pollution regulations for factory farms, the agency still hasn't acted. Meanwhile, communities continue to suffer — so we're taking EPA to court!
Industrial-scale agriculture operations, often referred to as “factory farms,” generate mountains of waste that wreak havoc on surrounding ecosystems. Thousands of factory farms across the country pollute waterways and drinking water, jeopardizing our health.
For decades, EPA’s neglectful approach to regulating factory farms has allowed the industry to freely pollute lands and waterways. EPA’s weak rules fall short of what the federal Clean Water Act requires. The law clearly requires polluters like factory farms to follow permits restricting their pollution discharges into rivers and streams. But most factory farms don’t have permits at all, and the permits that do exist don't adequately protect water quality.
That’s why Food & Water Watch filed a rulemaking petition with EPA on behalf of over 30 environmental and environmental justice groups, urging the agency to strengthen its clean water rules governing this industry — but that was more than five years ago!
Factory farms continue to pollute with little to no rules or oversight — so we're taking this fight to the courts. We’re suing to force EPA to finally answer our petition and take meaningful action. Food & Water Watch won’t stop until the EPA finally holds factory farms accountable for their devastating impact on people and the planet.
Food & Water Watch and its affiliated organization, Food & Water Action, are advocacy groups with a common mission to protect our food, water and climate.
