National Immigration Forum

THE FORUM DAILY

What a week!

Our "Leading the Way" convening was a success. Nearly 200 moderates and conservatives from more than 30 states learned about immigration and border challenges, heard personal stories, and talked about potential solutions. After advocating with more than 40 congressional offices Wednesday, yesterday we heard from Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D) and discussed a healthier border dialogue and the need to pass agricultural reforms and the Afghan Adjustment Act, among other topics.

And we weren’t alone. Farmers came to D.C. and called on the Senate to pass the Farm Workforce Modernization Act, per Chris Clayton of DTN. And there’s lots of talk about a solution for Dreamers. Suzanne Monyak of Roll Call reports on the push from Democratic senators and the openness of at least a few Republicans, amid the overall challenging path. (Ariana Figueroa of States Newsroom has more.)

A solution is essential to advance Texas’ business and economy, our own board member Glenn Hamer, president and CEO of the Texas Association of Business, wrote in Texas outlets including My RGV News.

Ongoing border challenges complicate things, as Caroline Coudriet of Roll Call reports. But we believe Republicans and Democrats can come together on these issues. You can still get in on our week of action digitally.

Lots more news to get to in our last abbreviated Forum Daily at least for now. (Did you like the shorter version? Let us know.) I’m Dan Gordon, VP of strategic communications at the Forum. Send suggestions my way, and have a great weekend.

TITLE 42 — The judge who blocked the use of Title 42 on Tuesday has delayed it for five weeks (Priscilla Alvarez and Tierney Sneed, CNN). In the meantime, DHS is looking at how it might still block Venezuelans after Title 42 ends (Rebecca Beitsch, The Hill).

RHETORIC VS. SOLUTIONS — A letter about the border from Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) to President Biden contains anti-immigrant rhetoric, with concerning implications (Armando Garcia, ABC News). Related: In The xxxxxx, our friend Alan Cross urges Republicans to govern with solutions rather than employ such rhetoric —and urges Democrats to join them in merging security and compassion.

NEW SHELTER RULE Faith-based His House in Miami has been Florida’s largest shelter for unaccompanied migrants for 26 years. The shelter recently filed a complaint against the state Department of Children and Families after the agency denied license renewal because His House cares for unaccompanied migrant kids. (Katie LaGrone, The E.W. Scripps Company)

MIGRANT TRANSPORT STUNT Text messages between high-level coordinators of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’s (R) migrant flights to Martha’s Vineyard reveal granular details about logisticsmixed with notes about celebrating their efforts. (Samantha J. Gross, Boston Globe)

CBP AGENT KILLED A gun battle off Puerto Rico’s coast resulted in the death of a Customs and Border Protection agent. Two others were wounded, and one person aboard the suspected smuggling vessel also was killed. (Michael Levenson and Víctor Manuel Ramos, The New York Times)

NANA’S LATIN GRAMMYLast but definitely not least — the co-winner of Best New Artist in last night’s Latin Grammys is 95 years old. Originally from Cuba, Angela Alvarez always wanted to be a singer, but her father rejected the idea. With her grandson’s help, she was able to record some of her songs. (Sydney Page, The Washington Post; Marysabel Huston-Crespo, CNN)
