| Earthjustice — with the help of our partners and supporters like you — just helped to put an Arctic drilling project on ice. |
| The Peregrine project was set to harm a fragile ecosystem in the Western Arctic and potentially emit massive amounts of carbon in doing so. However, the oil company appears to have put the project on hold earlier this month — citing Earthjustice’s lawsuit as a reason for why moving forward the project was too risky. |
| People like you are a huge part of why this happened. 42,000 Earthjustice supporters showed that the public cares about the Western Arctic by participating in comment periods to stop the Willow project, and Earthjustice donors helped fund our Alaska Office’s dogged legal work to stop projects like Peregrine before they can cause more harm. The oil industry knew that we weren’t going to go down easy. |
| An oil industry insider put it best, saying “I think it’s fair to say that the [environmental groups] being as aggressive as they have been in [the Western Arctic] has put a chill on everything that’s going on out there.” Together, we’re a force to be reckoned with, even for the most powerful industry on the planet. |
| Despite this victory, the Willow project — which would create as much carbon as 76 coal-fired power plants produce in a year — still threatens the Western Arctic. The Bureau of Land Management is about to release a Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS) and could open the door for drilling as early as next year. We stand ready to take the administration to court again if it approves the project on the basis of its current review — but we can avoid that altogether if we put enough pressure on the administration to stop the project when it’s time for it to make a decision. |
| While we wait for the Willow FEIS, we could use your help to stop a massive oil lease sale in the Gulf of Mexico. Tell the administration that we need it to lead in the fight against the climate crisis by keeping oil in the ground. |
