Dear John,

Last night we were honored to receive the 2022 Gwynne Skinner Human Rights Award from the International Corporate Accountability Roundtable (ICAR) in recognition of our work with the Tamil Nadu Textile and Common Labour Union (TTCU) and the Asia Floor Wage Alliance (AFWA) to win the groundbreaking Dindigul Agreement, an enforceable agreement which promotes the elimination of gender-based violence and harassment and raises standards in the global garment industry.

The Gwynne Skinner Human Rights Award recognizes the work of individuals and organizations that have made a significant contribution to corporate accountability. It is named after Gwynne Skinner, a multifaceted leader in the fight for corporate accountability. We are honored and proud to have been named a co-recipient of this important award.

The award acknowledges the work TTCU, AFWA, and GLJ-ILRF have done to fundamentally change working conditions at Natchi Apparels in Tamil Nadu, India.

To receive this award from our peers and alongside our allies is a testament to the work we do together to fight for workers’ rights around the world.

You have been with us over the last two years as we waged this campaign in honor of Jeyasre Kathiravel, a Dalit woman garment worker and union member who was organizing against gender-based violence and harassment at a major Indian supplier to American and European fashion brands and was murdered by her supervisor in January 2020. Following her murder, members of TTCU, led by Dalit women, rose up to demand #JusticeforJeyasre and an end to gender-based violence and harassment in their workplaces and community. GLJ-ILRF and AFWA partnered with TTCU to take Jeyasre’s story global, culminating in a speaking tour across the US and a global vigil in 33 countries.

After nearly two years of organizing, TTCU and its garment worker members, AFWA, and GLJ-ILRF won a groundbreaking set of agreements that bring together global giant H&M, Eastman Exports, the union, and international labor organizations to empower women workers and protect collective actions that seek to eradicate discrimination based on gender, caste, or migration status and to develop a culture of mutual respect.

With the Dindigul Agreement as a model, garment workers will continue to grow the movement to end gender-based violence and harassment in their factories, communities and across the entire fashion supply chain.

The Dindigul Agreement is just the beginning. We look forward to you joining us as we continue to build worker power in the garment industry and many others.

In Solidarity,

Jennifer (JJ) Rosenbaum

Executive Director, GLJ-ILRF
