Political issues and religious belief often intersect.  Church and state authority often clash.  But in modern Protestant America there is another way in which religion and politics mix – the skill set required to be a good Evangelical preacher and the skill set to be a successful politician are largely the same.  The Venn Diagram overlaps about 90%.  This is also why you see individuals rather fluidly moving back-and-forth between being a preacher and being a politician – Warnock in Georgia simply being the most current and prominent example.  This phenomenon is actually older than modern America, even if it has reached new levels in America – many of the best statesmen that served the crown in England before the Reformation were also churchmen.

Man, it’s ugly out there.  The post-election posturing is just short of bottles and knives.  But then that is a reflection of the campaign itself.  Politics has always been a cut-throat business, but there is something different in recent years both tonally and in intensity.  The tonal thing is about the state of our culture, but the intensity is about something different, I think.  The stakes have been raised.
