Dear Comrade,
We need to act fast. Read our emergency priority resolution here, and Akron DSA members, please be ready for an online vote this Saturday (11/19).
Akron City Council appears to be rushing their vote to approve the development plans for White Pond, and Citizens are opposed to their plans. This wetland area is home to vulnerable species of wildlife — likely including a few endangered species, though more time is needed to confirm. In Ohio, 90% of wetlands have already been destroyed, and as climate change intensifies, we can’t afford to destroy natural habitats, including a peat bog, which is something that is excellent at storing carbon and for mitigating air, water, soil, and noise pollution.
And isn’t it weird that Mayor Horrigan accepted campaign donations in 2021 from the developers and individuals affiliated with the developers – Triton Property Ventures, LLC and now White Pond Reserve, LLC – a company that seems to have no experience with new developments? Not to mention Triton is apparently a terrible landlord.
We need you to call, text, and email your Akron City Councilperson. Tell them to vote “No” on the White Pond development plan and that we need more time for ecological and traffic studies. We have an automated email you can fill out and send here.
You can also show solidarity by attending a short hike in the area hosted by Save White Pond from 1-2:30 p.m. on Sunday (11/20), parking at Sikich LLP (274 White Pond Drive). Click here to register. Dress warmly and bring a protest sign (e.g., Save White Pond)! And on Monday 11/21, show up to the City Council meeting at 7 p.m. at 166 S. High Street or register here (by 4 p.m.) to speak over Zoom.
In Solidarity,
Akron DSA
