[ [link removed] ]A Rice's whale coming up for air.

John,

A magnificent new whale has just been discovered — but already it's on the
brink of extinction!

Just 51 Rice’s whales remain in the world, all in the Gulf of Mexico,
where the US government is planning to lease what’s left of their critical
habitat to oil and gas companies.

But these leases are not a done deal — and if we act quickly, we can help
save the species.

Right now, the US government is asking the public for comments on the
environmental impact on the area. If we pump money into an all-out ads
blitz from now until 21 November we can send hundreds of thousands of
people to comment — and drown the US government with our powerful message:
save Rice’s whales. Are you in?

Thankfully scientists say these extraordinary creatures can recover and
rebuild their community, if we urgently act to protect them, and it’s
essential we do…

Whales are the carbon-capture titans of the animal world. One whale
absorbs as much CO2 as 1,000 trees — and they play an irreplaceable role
in supporting the growth of ocean plants that absorb as much CO2 as four
Amazon rainforests!

Any more drilling would be a death sentence for the Rice’s whale, and all
sea life that rely on these waters to survive.

Already, 97% of US oil and gas comes from the Gulf of Mexico, and the
region has yet to recover from the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill — the
largest marine disaster in history that killed nearly a fifth of whales
and thousands of sea turtles, dolphins and other wildlife.

But together, we can create a deafening roar of public pressure to stop
new oil and gas drilling and join with scientists calling on the US
government to designate these publicly owned areas as critical habitats
for Rice’s whales. John, will you join the fight to save
Rice’s whales?

We’ve used the power of our voices to win protections for critically
endangered animals before – let’s come together again to save the
extraordinary Rice’s whale.

Thanks for all that you do,
Yasmin and the SumOfUs team
