Dear Friend, With political and social polarization becoming increasingly prevalent in American society, the health and well-being of communities is at risk across the country. To protect and support social cohesion and community well-being, all community members need to be equipped with the resources to confront and build resilience against extremist narratives. Building Networks & Addressing Harm: A Community Guide to Online Youth Radicalization aims to deliver those resources. A joint publication by the SPLC and American University’s Polarization and Extremism Research and Innovation Lab (PERIL), the Community Guide educates, equips and empowers readers to strengthen their communities by building trusted networks to prevent radicalization and foster inclusion. The Community Guide also provides readers actionable steps to support those who have been directly targeted and indirectly impacted by hate-fueled acts. In addition to trusted adults’ roles as a first line of defense against radicalization, these networks are also first responders to the harm caused by radicalized individuals. When considered alongside the suite of resources we’ve published with PERIL, this guide aims to expand the responsibility of mitigating harm to the whole community. Only when all members of caregiving networks are equipped with these tools will we be able to effectively support and protect young people and our communities. Thank you for your continued dedication to building inclusive, resilient communities. In solidarity, Your friends at the Southern Poverty Law Center
