Our first protest of 2020!
MoCo DSA members:

It’s time to hit the streets!

Come out this Wednesday morning, January 8, at 8 a.m., for our first rally of the year to protest tax giveaways to the country clubs of the rich.

We will be at the very doorstep of the 1%:
Columbia Country Club, 7900 Connecticut Ave, Chevy Chase, MD 20815

Please email us to RSVP if you plan to come!

Most of us in Montgomery County could see cuts to public services because of a county budget shortfall. Meanwhile, the richest people in Montgomery County are still golfing and partying at our expense.

And we mean that literally: Tax giveaways for the country clubs of the rich cost our county an estimated $10 million every year.

The state legislature could do away with these unjust giveaways to the rich, but the country clubs keep taking the people’s money because most County residents don’t even know this is going on. Last year, we supported legislation introduced by State Delegate David Moon, which would have reduced some of these outrageous tax breaks. That bill narrowly failed, by a vote of 11-13, in the first step it would need for passage: getting majority support from Montgomery County’s delegation to the State House of Delegates. This year we are getting started early, and if enough people learn about these outrageous tax breaks for the rich, the state legislature will be forced to listen.

Our first step will be:

Rally Against Tax Giveaways to the Country Clubs of the Rich
January 8, 2020, 8-9 a.m.
Columbia Country Club
7900 Connecticut Ave
Chevy Chase, MD 20815

Please email us to RSVP if you plan to come! (and we'll give you detailed parking info)

Columbia Country Club charges an $80,000 initiation fee, and annual dues of $6,300. Its members include former presidents and vice-presidents of the United States. There is no reason that this club should be getting tax breaks, especially when the rest of us are facing cuts to public services.

Morning rush hour is a great time to be out in front of this country club to get the word out to commuters; we did it last year, and it will be only the first of our actions on this issue during the upcoming legislative session.

In addition to the rally – and even if you can’t make it to the rally – you should call your three state delegates right now and tell them it’s time to repeal the tax giveaways for country clubs. Here’s how to do that:
1. Go to mdelect.net.
2. Type your address in the address box on the left.
3. When you get your results, your three state delegates will be listed at the bottom.
4. Follow the links to get your three delegates’ phone numbers.
5. Call them and tell the staff who answer that you want the delegate to vote to end tax breaks for country clubs. If you get a voicemail, remember to leave your name and address so that they know you are a constituent.

Watch for other communications from us in the near future about other ways we will be mobilizing people in Montgomery County to repeal these outrageous tax breaks!

In solidarity,

Elissa, Frank, David, John and Zach
