Welcome to the November 2022 edition of Transparency, Credential Engine’s monthly newsletter. As we near the end of 2022, we are excited to announce that Credential Engine now has25 state partners ([link removed]) working towards credential transparency. Pennsylvania is the newest state partner, marking the pivotal moment that half the states are working with us on this critical mission. We are excited to see this partnership in action and look forward to seeing Pennsylvania data in the Registry. Keep an eye out for announcements from Credential Engine, as we have many exciting things coming up!

Credential Engine's 5th Anniversary Celebration Event

On December 7th, Credential Engine will be (virtually) celebrating its fifth anniversary and acknowledging all that has been achieved with its many partners. The organization has been working to bring full transparency to the vast and chaotic education and occupational credentials marketplace. If you haven’t registered yet, we invite you to join us on December 7th from 1:00-4:00 pm ET to celebrate Credential Engine, our partners, and all the work we have achieved together. The fifth-anniversary celebration will feature the release of the latest “Counting Credentials” reports for the country, presentations from state partners, an announcement of an upcoming state policy academy, remarks from a bi-partisan panel of U.S. Senators, and insights from various funders of this work.

* Focus on Equity and Students: Three experts in this space, Dr. Paul LeBlanc, Tina Gridiron, and Elena Quiroz-Livanis will share insights.
* What’s Next?: Credential Engine staff will provide organizational updates.
* Closing Session: You will hear from Credential Engine Board Chair, Barbara Gellman-Danley and Strada President and CEO, Stephen Moret.

Southern New Hampshire University Seeks to Unlock Opportunities with the Credential Transparency Description Language: Credential Engine and Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) are working together to provide public linked open data about SNHU’s curriculum, including credentials, courses, competencies, pathways, and more through the use of the Credential Transparency Description Language (CTDL). The CTDL is a common data language that enables providers to organize, connect, and consistently describe their credentials and publish them to the Registry. As of now, SNHU has published to the Registry 114 credentials, 1375 courses, and 957 competencies ([link removed]) that are transparently linked to each other with hundreds of CTDL connections across SNHU’s curriculum. In a recent blog, we dive into Dr. Paul LeBlanc’s book Students First and his compelling analysis of the problems facing higher education today. Then we
discuss the major contribution and positive implications of SNHU publishing their curriculum. SNHU along with other organizations publish to the Registry with the goal of building new learning ecosystems that empower students to make better-informed decisions. This person will help in advancing Credential Engine’s vision, mission, and goals of credential transparency to ensure that everyone can make their most informed decisions with regard to credential opportunities and pathways. Got certifications? Credential Engine will be making certifications easier to publish this winter! We will be helping certification bodies publish students’ most-desired information on training: the costs, requirements, duration, and occupations of certifications. Job descriptions, programs, career guidance tools, and labor market information will be able to link to these and give them relevant exposure. Bush Center Credentials Webpage: The George W. Bush Institute recently launched a ‘Credentials’ webpage ([link removed]) that discusses credentials and the transparency gap in the United States. With nearly 1 million unique credentials in the U.S. alone, we need to have resources, like this webpage, that help explain the problems and solutions to credential transparency. Our goal is to illuminate credential transparency and through the resources included on the page, we are able to help innovators in this space understand the magnitude of the need for transparency.


** Policy Corner.

National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE) Working Group: The NICE 2021-2025 Strategic Plan focuses on energizing, promoting, and coordinating a robust community working together to advance an integrated ecosystem of cybersecurity education, training, and workforce development. The goal is to prepare, grow, and sustain a cybersecurity workforce that promotes America’s national security and economic prosperity. The Transform Learning Process working group recommends using the Credential Transparency Description Language (CTDL) as an articulated common definition of credentials. Learn more here. ** State Connections.

[link removed] Jersey Training Explorer: New Jersey has released its (Beta) New Jersey Training Explorer. ([link removed]) The training explorer is a comprehensive list of all schools and organizations offering education and job training programs that are eligible to receive publicly funded tuition assistance. You are able to search for training, enter a training name, provider or job title in the search bar.


** Technology & Support.

Keep an eye out for Credential Engine’s newest tool! In the next few months, Credential Engine will deploy its Badge Publisher Tool. The tool aims to have a user-friendly Open Badge Publisher Web application that can be used by all Credential Engine account holders. The tool will enable users to publish the badges they issue to the Credential Registry. In support of this forthcoming tool, Credential Engine’s EdTech Advisory Group ([link removed]) will also provide guidance for badge issuers on publishing to Credential Registry and integrating CTDL information into OpenBadges. [link removed] Podcast: On October 24th, Credential Engine CEO, Scott Cheney, spoke to The EdUp Experience podcast hosted by Dr. Joe Sallustio and co-host Dr. Bill Pepicello. Cheney discusses how we are working to create a transparent and common credentialing language, the CTDL, why our work is important and necessary, and how it will impact higher education and the workforce. Additionally, Cheney spoke on how we define a credential and what is the future of higher education. You can listen to the episode here ([link removed]) .

Merit ASPIRE Launch: Credential Engine is pleased to be partnering with Merit and a coalition of non-profit and private sector organizations to accelerate the adoption of technology and practices to enable military reciprocity by and between states. The Alliance for States Providing Interoperable REciprocity (ASPIRE) will support service members and families with interoperable verified digital credentials. Ensuring transparency of these credentials, and making them more easily issued, transferred, and managed will be the result of this partnership.

Skills-Driven States Showcase
October 26-28, 2022: Credential Engine CEO, Scott Cheney, and Credential Engine CSO, Deb Everhart, attended the National Governors Association Skills-Driven States Showcase in Seattle, WA. This meeting brought together multiple states and experts in this space to support states in preparing their employers, education and workforce systems, data systems, and policies to design and implement digital wallet and LER projects as an equitable economic mobility tool.

HLC Annual Fall State Agencies Meeting
November 17-19, 2022: Scott Cheney will attend the 2022 Annual Fall State Agencies Meeting hosted by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC).

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) 127th Annual Meeting
December 3-6, 2022: Scott Cheney will be presenting at the SACSCOC Annual Meeting at the Transparency and Navigation of the Chaotic Credentials Marketplace session. This session will consider the growing landscape of all types and levels of credentials, how states are improving their understanding of the landscape through credential transparency, and what the emerging policy landscape looks like.
