Election Results Signal Need for Urgent Congressional Action this Year

Now that the results of last week’s midterm elections have come into focus, the need for Congress to act during this year’s “lame duck” session is critical. While federal policymakers made important strides over the last year or two on issues that affect economic, racial, and social justice, Congress must work swiftly to address a number of gaps before the year is out. These issues include—among others—restoring the expanded Child Tax Credit and Earned Income Tax Credit, passing the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, codifying a path to citizenship, and much more. In repeated exit polls, voters identified inflation as their top issue, one of many signs that workers are struggling to make ends meet amidst rapidly rising prices. With inflation outpacing wages, workers—particularly those who earn low wages, those from communities of color, and women—need all the support our nation can muster. Apprenticeships are a key strategy for putting them on a career path toward economic security and addressing equity gaps.

Worker Flexibility and Choice Act: The Corporate Attempt at Stripping Labor Protections

 

As corporate profits reach an all-time high, corporations are looking to cut labor costs at the expense of workers’ rights. The Worker Flexibility and Choice Act (HR 8442) is being marketed as a way for employers to encourage “flexibility” and “economic opportunity” for workers in a new economy. However, if passed, the proposed bill would allow the exploitation of every worker, stripping their rights on the job.

Dr. Nia West-Bey and Isha Weerasinghe worked with partners from the Prevention Institute and the Research Triangle Institute on an update to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s suicide prevention technical package. The updated resource, Suicide Prevention Resource for Action, was released on October 27.
