The Metro Detroit Chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America (MDDSA) expresses full solidarity with unionized Starbucks baristas striking across the country this Thursday, November 17th. Workers at seven unionized Starbucks stores across Michigan, including one in Metro Detroit, at the Partridge Creek Mall, have joined the picket line as part of the Red Cup Rebellion. There are over 100 stores participating in this nationwide Unfair Labor Practice (ULP) strike named after the corporation's “Red Cup Day,” where the corporation will be giving out red cups for select purchases. In the days ahead, we will learn more about what we can do to support the Starbucks Workers United members and will mobilize our over 900 members across Metro Detroit in support of the workers’ demands.

The Metro Detroit Chapter of DSA supports the worker’s demands that all unionized stores be fully staffed, and that Starbucks stop breaking federal law. Instead, Starbucks must begin to bargain in good faith with the workers’ democratically chosen union. Starbucks partners are forced to run understaffed stores while being given inconsistent schedules. We demand that Starbucks meet with the workers at the bargaining table to ensure proper staffing and scheduling for the safety and well-being of the workers.
