Hey John – we knew “the big announcement” was scheduled for Tuesday night, but to be honest, I was trying to avoid paying attention.
So, I was disappointed, but not surprised when I heard the highlights of Donald Trump’s announcement speech: More doom, gloom, election denying, and “American carnage” meant to divide us up and pit us against each other.
If he were a rational or honest person, Donald Trump would have recognized that losing his re-election campaign to Joe Biden in 2020 was proof that Americans were fed up with his lies. He would have faded into history, and spent quality time with his family. But of course, Donald Trump is neither rational nor honest.
Now, I don’t need to sit here and try to convince you why Trump and his 2024 campaign are so dangerous to this country. We all had front-row seats to his constant dishonesty, incompetence, and hateful divisiveness during his 2016 campaign and his four-year term as President.
We also know that he has a fervent base of MAGA supporters who will fight tooth and nail to get him back in the Oval Office, despite their midterm losses.
Yes, after the elections wrapped up last week (except here in Georgia, where we’re all doing everything we can to re-elect Senator Warnock before December 6th) – we want a break from the 24/7 political chatter, but we need to gear ourselves up for the challenge ahead of us in the lead up to the 2024 presidential election.
So, John – it’s time to lean back into the grassroots work that has propelled our gun safety movement, and that paid off in a historic midterm election for Democrats. Keep talking to your neighbors, engaging with your local political organizing groups and elected officials, and fighting for the America that you want to live in.
When the 2024 elections do start to heat up, we’ll be ready to show Donald Trump that his time in American politics is permanently over and done.
Onward,
Lucy McBath
