Friends:

When Mabel Koroma first learned she was living with HIV, she worried for herself and for her unborn child. But, with the help of PIH Sierra Leone, Mabel took daily medication to suppress the virus. Her child was born without HIV, and Mabel could rest knowing she was already a hero.

But Mabel didn’t rest. Instead, she joined the PIH Sierra Leone team as a Community Health Worker, using her experience to help her neighbors overcome their own health challenges.

After successful PIH advocacy efforts to expand access worldwide, that daily medication that empowered Mabel costs just $317 per year.

Mabel was handed what was once a death sentence. Now she’s living a fulfilling life.

Viral suppression, the state Mabel achieved with daily medication, means that not only is she effectively managing HIV, but she also can’t pass the virus on as long as she keeps up with her medication.

And that’s the key point: HIV can be stopped, worldwide, not with a new biomedical breakthrough, but simply by expanding access to medicine and community health worker networks like the ones that empowered Mabel.

Donate now to invest in exactly those systems of care and medicine delivery in 11 countries around the world.
