American democracy survived a major test on Election Day.

But make no mistake: The attacks aren’t going away. And we need to be ready to investigate them. 

Last year, we put together a diverse group of tenacious investigative journalists to cover the attacks on democracy. We were intentional: They couldn’t be the usual suspects of political reporters. This was a unique, existential crisis, and covering the movement was going to require fresh thinking and new ideas.

• We sounded the early alarm that election deniers were running for secretary of state positions in important battleground states.
   
• We detailed how GOP election officials were being purged for not going along with the 2020 attempts to undermine the election.
   
• We used mounds of tax returns and court documents to uncover how some of the principal architects of the Big Lie had turned it into a big grift: They made big claims, never proved them and then pocketed the donations that came flowing in.
   
• And just weeks ago, we unearthed what experts are calling the most threatening voter suppression in decades: a state-by-state campaign by election deniers to criminalize normal voting and elections activity in their states.

I couldn’t be prouder of the work this team put together this year. This is journalism that defends democracy. 

To be clear, we’re nonpartisan. At our core, we believe in truth and in democracy. And when any political party turns its back on those values, we’re not afraid to say so.

American democracy has never been perfect. There are many people it does not serve and has never served. But it needs to be moving forward, not backward.
