Dear Friend,
My name is Maria Hinojosa and Giving Tuesday is right around the corner. I'm very blessed that I'm able to give to an organization like the Young Center for Immigrant Children's Rights. It means a lot to me to be able to donate. And so I'm going to ask you to do the same.
Giving to the Young Center is personal for me. As you know, if you read my memoir "Once I Was You" I was almost taken from my own mom. I didn't realize it until the zero tolerance policy happened, and my mom called me. She was worried, crying, saying: "It could have been you, it could have been me that lost her child." So this it does mean a lot to me.
The Young Center right now is the only organization that trains advocates to be with children who have been taken from their parents because they are continually still taken from their parents in our country. And it's work that needs to happen.
I could have been one of those kids. But I ended up having the privilege to instead tell these stories and talk about these issues.
So this giving Tuesday, I'm giving to the Young Center. And guess what? Every new donor from now until November 29th who gives at least $100, you get a copy of the new, Young Readers version of my memoir: "Once I Was You Finding My Voice and Passing the Mic."
I hope that, whether you're an immigrant or you're not, this book will encourage you, and encourage the young people in your life to realize that we are all telling American stories.
