Republicans Gain Majority in the House — Officially Controlling 218 House Seats

Wall Street Journal: Republicans won enough seats to take control of the U.S. House of Representatives from Democrats, the AP projected late Wednesday, ending two years of unified Democratic control of Congress and the White House. Rep. Mike Garcia won re-election in the California’s 27th District, putting the total seats at 218 for Republicans and 210 for Democrats. Republicans had been stuck at 217 since Monday, with several races still uncalled, mostly in California (Wall Steet Journal). CNBC: While Democrats overcame political headwinds in major swing states, they faltered in the solid-blue stronghold of New York, where Republicans performed stronger than some analysts expected. Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chairman Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney, who came under fire from his own party after a messy New York redistricting fight, lost his race and ceded his seat to GOP challenger Mike Lawler (CNBC).

Senate Moves Forward with Same Sex Marriage Bill
National Review: The Respect for Marriage Act, a measure that would provide federal protections for same-sex and interracial marriages, cleared a key procedural hurdle on Wednesday, with senators voting 62 to 37 to end debate on the measure and advance it. All 50 members of the Democratic caucus and 12 Republicans voted to advance the bill (National Review). Albert Mohler: The new amended Senate bill—the “commonsense” bill that “protects Americans’ religious liberties”—actually does no such thing. The amended language includes vague assurances that the legislation will not violate religious freedom but it mostly assures us that the bill will not do what no one claimed it would do, such as require congregations and churches to solemnize same-sex marriages. What is left wide open is the threat to ministries such as Christian orphanages and children’s care as well as adoption ministries and foster care. This amended language resolves nothing, but is offered as an assurance that religious freedom is protected (WNG).

Federal Judge Blocks Title 42 Utilization at Southern Border
Fox News: A federal judge issued an order on Tuesday barring federal authorities from using Title 42, a Trump-era rule that allowed the U.S. to quickly expel migrants who crossed the border. U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan said the policy is “arbitrary and capricious” and violates the Administrative Procedure Act in his ruling on Tuesday. Title 42 was originally enacted at the outset of the coronavirus pandemic in March 2020, allowing for authorities to quickly expel migrants on public health grounds (Fox News). Reporter Bill Melugin: Already hearing from multiple Border Patrol sources that they will be expecting a significant surge/rush of migrants at the border once word gets around about this order, on top of numbers that are already at all times highs even with Title 42 in place (Twitter). Reporter Drew Hernandez: BREAKING: Chuck Schumer calls for a path to citizenship for 11 million+ illegals in the USA This is exactly why the Southern Border has been wide open since Joe Biden was installed (Twitter).

Americans Feel Inflation Pressures Around Thanksgiving
Townhall: Americans feeling inflation’s pinch better brace themselves for the cost of hosting Thanksgiving, which surged 20 percent since last year. The average cost for a family of 10 this year is $64.05—a $10.74 or 20 percent increase from last year (Townhall). Farm Bureau: The centerpiece on most Thanksgiving tables – the turkey – costs more than last year, at $28.96 for a 16-pound bird. That’s $1.81 per pound, up 21% from last year, due to several factors beyond general inflation (Farm Bureau).

Governor Whitmer Looks to Start Her Next Term with Gun Control Laws
Daily Wire: Gun control is on the docket for Michigan’s Democratic leaders and lawmakers after the party boasted historic wins in the state’s midterm elections last week. Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer told news outlet Bridge Michigan that gun control is a top priority heading into her second term, now with Democratic majorities in both chambers of the state’s legislature. Democrats in the state previously introduced a “red flag” law along with other gun regulations, and Whitmer believes the measures are within reach for lawmakers to pass… Along with the red flag law, Whitmer is pushing to stop people from buying guns from a private seller without going through a background check and wants to force gun owners with children in the home to secure firearms in a lockbox (Daily Wire). Jonathan Oosting: As she prepares for a second term with new Democratic Legislature, Gov. Whitmer told @BridgeMichigan she would “love to sign” gun safe storage, red flag and universal background check bills into law (Twitter).

Democrat DA in Philadelphia Faces Impeachment for Progressive Policies
CBS: Philadelphia’s elected Democratic prosecutor faces a state Senate trial and possible removal from office after the Republican-led state House voted Wednesday to impeach him over progressive policies he has enacted amid rising crime in the city. Lawmakers voted 107-85 to impeach District Attorney Larry Krasner, setting the stage for what would be the first Pennsylvania Senate impeachment trial in nearly three decades. Republicans currently have a 29-21 majority in the state Senate, going to 28-22 early next year, and a two-thirds vote of the senators present would be required to remove Krasner (CBS). Wall Street Journal: First elected in 2017, Mr. Krasner is one of several liberal prosecutors who have taken office around the U.S. in recent years. They have pursued goals such as diverting nonviolent drug offenders to treatment instead of jail, sparing juveniles from being tried as adults and devoting resources to scrutinizing old cases in search of wrongful prosecutions and imprisonments (Wall Street Journal).

Dan Crenshaw Introduces Legislation to Crack Down on Cartels Peddling Drugs Into the Country
Fox News: Legislation being introduced by Rep. Dan Crenshaw, R-Texas, on Wednesday would significantly ramp up federal penalties for those involved in Mexican cartels — including specifically targeting their enormous financial power — as a response to the crisis at the southern border. The bill, “Declaring War on the Cartels Act,” would add to existing language in the U.S. code that targets criminal street gangs in order to target transnational criminal organizations that are involved in smuggling drugs and illegal migrants into the U.S. across the southern border (Fox News). National Review: The bill would allow federal judges to tack ten to 20 years onto criminal sentences for crimes  — including crimes of violence, controlled substance violations, false statements, and human trafficking — committed by members of a Transnational Criminal Cartel (TCC).  This mechanism is modeled after existing legislation targeting members of criminal street gangs (National Review).

Elon Musk Will Step Aside and Find Someone to Run Twitter
Axios: Elon Musk on Wednesday told a Delaware judge that he plans to “reduce my time at Twitter and find somebody else to run Twitter over time.” Musk’s recent focus on Twitter, which he took ownership of three weeks ago have sparked frustration amongst Tesla investors. One of them is suing Musk over the size of his Tesla compensation package, and the Delaware hearing was part of that lawsuit. The company is in the midst of a major restructuring under Musk that has pushed thousands of employees and contractors out (Axios). Reporter Becky Peterson: Defense asks Musk about Twitter: He says he plans to find someone else to run it. As for those Tesla engineers “reviewing code”, they were there on a voluntary basis after hours (Twitter).
