John - How does the witness of the Salvadoran martyrs still animate the Ignatian family's work for justice today?
John
Today, November 16, 2022 marks thirty three years since the murder of six Jesuits, their housekeeper, and her daughter, at the University of Central America in El Salvador—killed for their commitment to the poor and marginalized.
Twenty five years ago, under a tent by the banks of the Chattahoochee River in Columbus, Georgia, members of the Jesuit and broader Catholic network gathered for the first Ignatian Family Teach-In For Justice ([link removed]) (IFTJ).
Throughout the 1990s, an annual gathering had emerged at the gates of the School of the Americas at Fort Benning, drawing attention to the U.S. role in the Salvadoran civil war. Members of the Jesuit network from across the U.S. were compelled to join in these gatherings in response to the assassinations of the Jesuits and their companions.
This year, we gathered in Washington, D.C., for the 25th Ignatian Family Teach-In for Justice ([link removed]) , commemorating the lives and legacy of the martyrs. Below, learn more about how ISN and the entire Ignatian family are inspired to take action for justice by their legacy, thirty three years later.
Thank you for being a part of this powerful network, and for your ongoing commitment to "a faith that does justice."
Peace,
