Mixed-status families' experiences with the stimulus checks
As the November 17 IRS Free File deadline to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit and several tax credits approaches, a

new brief examines mixed-status immigrant families’ experiences accessing Economic Impact Payments, or stimulus checks, and the impact of these funds on their overall well-being.

Researchers find that mixed-status families who received stimulus checks said the payments significantly helped them meet basic needs, avoid a housing crisis, and address their children’s needs, but most of the participants interviewed felt it was risky to receive stimulus checks due to misperceptions circulating in their community and fears of immigration consequences. They expressed concerns that accepting EIPs could affect their immigration status, and they reported hearing from acquaintances that EIPs necessitated repayment and would indebt their children.

To better inform mixed-status families of their eligibility and motivate them to claim the funds, participants suggest:
-
Information about EIPs in the community be improved and presented in a format that counters misconceptions.
-
Community-based organizations provide education and counseling on the tax system, so families can understand government program policies for which they or family members are eligible.
-
Families be proactive in seeking out information and enlist a reputable tax preparer.
