John,
I'm reaching out with a heavy heart, but also a renewed sense of determination, for all of the estimated 15,000 brave protesters in Iran who have been unjustly detained by a brutal Iranian state.
As the first death sentences [[link removed]] related to the demonstrations have been handed out by Iranian authorities – and as over 300 Iranians have been killed as part of this uprising – I am encouraged that the UN Human Rights Council has finally announced that they will convene a special session on November 24 focused on the escalating abuses in Iran. [[link removed]] We are grateful that the calls of Amnesty International, which NIAC and countless human rights advocates supported, have been heeded.
NIAC has always been a strong advocate for multilateral action to hold Iran's government accountable and stop the abuses – including our successful efforts in 2011 [[link removed]] to help secure the establishment of a UN human rights monitor on Iran. This latest step at the UN represents a clear opportunity to shine a powerful spotlight on the human rights abuses that are occurring against Iran's people and to hold the Islamic Republic accountable.
Important steps have been taken but more must be done. Congress has yet to pass anything to stand with the brave people of Iran, condemn Iran's rights abuses or urge prudent steps in response.
Send a message to your member of Congress calling on them to speak out and act in support of the Iranian people. [[link removed]] While the Biden administration and UN have taken important steps, Congress has yet to do so as a result of the recent election. Time is running out before the end of the year - Congress must act with the urgency of the moment and pass resolutions standing with the people of Iran.
take action now [[link removed]]
We will continue to shine a light on the violence of the Islamic Republic and the Iranian people's demands for freedom through NIAC's Human Rights Tracker [[link removed]] , and share tangible actions everyone can take to stand with the Iranian people at our Solidarity Center. [[link removed]]
Ba sepas,
Jamal Abdi
President, NIAC
