I’d like to introduce you to the work of Conservation Through Public Health (CTPH), our longest-standing Global Partner. Based in Uganda, CTPH protects East Africa’s endangered mountain gorillas by improving the health and livelihoods of the people living in and around protected gorilla habitats.

When wildlife veterinarian Dr. Gladys Kalema-Zikusoka founded CTPH, she soon realized that she could only protect mountain gorillas by making the “population connection” to the health and stability of the human communities that surround gorilla habitats. Smaller, healthier families put less pressure on the protected forests gorillas call home.

Thanks to support from Population Connection, driven by donors like you, CTPH launched a new “Model Households” program in 2021. Run by CTPH’s Village Health Teams—usually led by local women—this project educates households in reproductive health and family planning practices, to illustrate behaviors that allow families to thrive without taking a toll on their environment and natural resources.

In its initial phase, this program included over 7,600 households, made up of almost 39,000 people!

This is just one example of how CTPH creates sustainable and healthy communities in the areas where they work, and why we’re proud to sponsor CTPH’s outreach through our Global Partners program. Will you join us in supporting their work?

Before CTPH introduced Village Health Teams, modern contraceptive use in the focus communities was just 22 percent. Ten years later, it has risen to 67 percent—far higher than Uganda’s national average of 45 percent. Expanding voluntary access to family planning to promote a sustainable balance between humans and gorillas is essential to CTPH’s work, and we are proud to partner with CTPH in this endeavor.
