Dear Resident,
It continues to be a busy time in both the constituency and in parliament, with successes on a number of issues as well as ongoing lobbying on others.
We’ve received the welcome news that the independent Boundary Commission, after the challenge I made along with many residents and local organisations, have scrapped plans to rename the constituency and instead retain the name Erewash. Each of the towns and villages have their own clear sense of community identity, history and local traditions, yet they are unified by the name Erewash. It would have been ludicrous to impose a name change without local support.
The Remembrance Day commemorations seem to get larger each year, and last Sunday was no exception. Those paying their respect on Armistice Day also seem to increase in number and I was proud to lay wreaths on both days in Long Eaton and Ilkeston as well as planting a poppy cross Parliament’s Garden of Remembrance. These are just my small tributes to all those from Erewash who made the ultimate sacrifice in the service of our Country. It was also a delight to join the poppy sellers on the run up to the weekend – everyone is always so generous in their support for this cause. It was also a delight to get recognition for the Ilkeston and the Long Eaton Branches of the Royal British Legion at Defence Questions, which you can read here ([link removed]) .
I’ve really appreciated everyone’s enthusiasm for ‘saving the Number 21 bus’ which serves Kirk Hallam and already hundreds of signatures have been collected. I intend to present the petition to Parliament on Tuesday 6th December, so just a couple of weeks for those last few signatures to be collected and all petition sheets to be returned to my office.
Its Parliament Week this week, with a wide range of organisations across Erewash taking part. This ranges from Ilkeston Rainbows to a Care Home, and includes several local schools and religious groups. I’m sure this year there is the widest reach of organisations getting involved, which must be good for democracy. If you wish to participate next year, just contact my office and we will put you in touch with the Education Service that is responsible for this special week.
I’m sure you will not be surprised to learn that I have devoted a considerable amount of time addressing the concerns raised with me about the Home Office Accommodation Centres on Bostocks Lane. I’ve had a meeting with the Immigration Minister, as well as raising concerns in the House of Commons, including at Prime Minister’s Question Time when I secured a cast iron guarantee from The Prime Minister that both he and the Home Secretary are working day and nights to resolve this problem. Rest assured, I will continue to press the Government until we get a firm timetable for the permanent closure of these centres. My contributions made in the Chamber can be read here ([link removed]) .
With best wishes,
Maggie Throup MP
Member of Parliament for Erewash
