Friends,
Yesterday afternoon, a shooting at the Gilroy Garlic Festival in Northern California left 3 people dead and injured 15 more.
According to the festival's website, it began in 1979 and is now known across the globe as the world's greatest summer food fair.
Police believe the shooter bypassed metal detectors by cutting through a fence before opening fire with a military-style assault rifle.
On Saturday night, while the 56th Old Timers Day in Brownsville, Brooklyn was wrapping up and everyone was gathered signing "Family Reunion," a shooter opened fire killing one man and injuring 11 more.
This event had taken place since 1963 without incident, until Saturday, when 56 years of peace was broken.
These are both tragic and horrific reminders that this type of senseless violence can happen anywhere.
Our hearts are with the victims of these shootings, their families and friends, and the communities in Gilroy and Brownsville.
This reality is horrifying. It's heartbreaking. And the fact that our nation's leaders continue to fail to protect us should fuel outrage in every American.
We are 210 days into 2019 and there have already been 246 mass shootings.
This must stop -- we must stop this.
Congress knows how to solve this problem.
They know the steps they can take that will end the carnage in our communities.
Now, it's time for them to act.
All our best,
The team at Giffords
