Dear John,

As the holiday season rapidly approaches, Equality Virginia has been preparing for the new year and all that it will bring. One of our biggest priorities coming up in early 2023 is the Virginia General Assembly session. We know based on both national trends and statements made by legislators right here in our Commonwealth that attacks on transgender and nonbinary youth are imminent.

Prefiling of bills began in July, and we have been keeping a close eye out for anti-trans legislation. Unfortunately, bills attacking trans youth are starting to pop up, and more are on the way. House Bill 1387 is yet another attempt to ban the participation of trans youth in school sports, and a senator has committed to introducing a ban on gender-affirming care for trans youth.

We understand that this is distressing for folks, especially transgender and nonbinary youth who would be directly affected by these policies. Fighting legislative attacks like these year after year is exhausting for our community, and we encourage everyone to check in with themselves, practice self-care, and lean on their friends and neighbors throughout the next few months.

For those looking to take action now, use our action form to send a message to your state senator and delegate urging them to support trans youth and oppose harmful legislation. Stay tuned for additional ways to advocate during the legislative session - it’s going to take all of us.

Let us be clear - these bills are nothing more than political attacks meant to stir up a base ahead of elections. And since 2023 is a big election year in Virginia, we're likely to see lawmakers stoop to low levels in hopes of winning votes. But LGBTQ+ Virginians and allies are powerful advocates, and Equality Virginia is committed to fighting alongside the community to defeat these bills and offer support in whatever ways are needed. We will stop these attacks, share our stories, and voice our love for trans youth across the state - together.

In solidarity,

Kyleigh Hynes (she/her)
