Hi John,
Germany has announced it is leaving the Energy Charter Treaty. This is amazing news, and it is a tribute to the campaigning of allies in Germany with support of activists like you all across Europe.

Another week, another country says they’re heading for the exit. It almost feels like it’s becoming a habit. Indeed we are hopeful there will be more - Slovenia also said it was quitting last week, and several countries were waiting to see what Germany did. There is now a good chance they will be lining up to get out of the ECT in the coming days.

But you know what I’m going to say… so far, the UK isn’t leaving. The government is giving itself space to potentially change course, though - saying it is “closely monitoring” what other countries are doing and taking that into account in its plans.

We now have a window of opportunity to pile on the pressure from every angle for the UK to join the exodus. Thank you to everyone who already wrote to the ministers directly. Now, can you email your MP, and ask them to pass your message on to the government that the UK needs to exit the ECT now?

If the UK stubbornly stays in the Energy Charter Treaty while others leave, this will allow some of the world's most polluting corporations to continue to use it to disrupt and deter climate action.

Extended licences for North Sea oil and gas fields like Cambo would continue to be protected under this secretive legal framework - if a future government wanted to cancel the oil field, it could be sued. We need to get rid of this climate-wrecking treaty once and for all.

If you can write to your MP this could really help at this stage.
Most MPs are not aware how fast things are moving with the ECT, so for those who are already supportive it’s important to let them know there is an opportunity right now.

It’s equally really worthwhile to contact those who haven’t been supportive so far, including Conservative MPs. The fact that a country like Germany is leaving the ECT shows that other countries which generally side with business are leaving too. This is our chance to persuade Conservative MPs that this treaty is not worth defending.

** Together against the treaty
------------------------------------------------------------
I also wanted to share with you some photos from our protest at the start of the month outside of the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy.

Together with activists from Friends of the Earth and War on Want, we took our message that the UK is being left in an increasingly lonely position, tied to this secret weapon of the fossil fuel industry, while other countries get out. We also highlighted the case of Ascent Resources, a UK company which is suing Slovenia over a ban on fracking.

It was great to be there taking action together with others, as we also took action on the climate march, and as we are also standing together with campaigners all across Europe from Slovenia to the UK. Together we’ve already succeeded in pulling six countries out of the door. One by one, we’re winning. Let’s see if we can get the UK out now!

Thank you for all that you do,

** Stop corporate courts blocking climate action
------------------------------------------------------------
Fossil fuel companies are using secret tribunals written into trade deals to sue governments over climate action. But a movement is coming together to call on the UK and governments around the world to scrap these ‘corporate courts’.

Regular gifts give us the long-term stability to plan effective campaigns for a more just world, and help build global solidarity.
