John,
We fought hard for a national eviction moratorium during the pandemic, but after the right-wing Supreme Court blocked the moratorium last year, millions more U.S. residents face the threat of homelessness.
Evictions are traumatic, with families forcibly removed from their homes. And now, evictions are returning to pre-pandemic levels in places like Detroit—a majority-renter city with one-third of residents below the poverty line. With rental prices on the rise as well, more families are at risk of losing their homes in my district and across the country.
Housing justice advocates are calling for tenant protections such as Just Cause Eviction legislation, which would protect renters from evictions without a legitimate cause, support renters in challenging unfair eviction notices, and empower tenants experiencing discrimination or poor living conditions to advocate for themselves without fear of retaliation.
Sign the petition if you agree: We need to recognize that housing is a human right and protect renters nationwide, including Just Cause Eviction protections.
Evictions disproportionately affect Black families, and Black women in particular. I’ve stood alongside single mothers who’ve been targeted by predatory landlords. After getting evicted, people then face further discrimination and segregation because eviction filings stay on people’s records, limiting their ability to rent elsewhere.
We’ve got to fight evictions and ensure housing as a basic right in our country.
I’ve fought predatory landlords and lenders side-by-side with grassroots housing justice groups. In Congress, my fight for housing justice has included introducing the Tenant Empowerment Act to strengthen HUD tenant protections and provide them with the tools necessary to improve the quality of their homes.
In addition to pushing for a national eviction moratorium, I’ve advocated to cancel mortgage and rent payments during the pandemic—including debt forgiveness and protecting people’s credit ratings and rental history.
We need bold policies at every level of government to meet the needs of our communities. A nationwide grassroots movement for housing justice has ensured protections in cities and states around the country, including Ann Arbor, Michigan, which just passed a Just Cause Eviction policy. Let’s keep it going!
Help protect our human right to safe housing by adding your name in support of Just Cause Eviction policies.
In solidarity,
Rashida
