John —
Earlier this year, unprecedented floods covered one-third of the country. Homes, crops and businesses were destroyed, affecting 33 million people. Tragically, more than 1,700 people lost their lives.
It's hard to imagine just how large an area was impacted by this enormous, climate change-driven disaster. To put it into perspective, can you guess which U.S. state is roughly the same size as the area impacted by Pakistan's floods?
The number of people whose lives were thrown into turmoil — either because their home was destroyed, their source of income lost to the flood waters or due to the sudden inaccessibility of medical care — can be hard to comprehend.
Overall 33 million Pakistanis have been affected by the flooding — four times the population of New York City.
Thanks to the generosity of supporters like you, the IRC launched an emergency response to provide immediate assistance to those impacted by the floods.
Our response is focused on the needs of women and girls who are facing higher rates of gender-based violence and inaccessible services. We have reached almost 29,000 women and girls with humanitarian assistance, and provided food, dignity kits and hygiene products to address the need for sanitation and menstrual items.
The IRC and partner organizations have been on the ground since early July, and we'll continue our response as long as we're needed. You can learn more about the IRC's response in Pakistan and crisis zones around the world here.
