Donald Trump uses social media to spread lies that undermine democracy and
incite violence. Facebook and Twitter were right to remove him from their
platforms for the good of public safety. They owe it to their users, their
advertisers, and the public good to stand by that decision. [ [link removed] ]Don't give
a platform back to Trump for his promotion of hate and violence.
Facebook and Twitter both made the decision to remove Donald Trump
after his role in inciting and prolonging the deadly January 6
insurrection. He had propagated lies about the election results, sought to
overturn the outcome and seize power, and stirred up the violent attack on
the Capitol—which he then defended.
There is a difference between freedom of speech and incitement of hate and
violence, and we can't let Trump, Elon Musk, and Mark Zuckerberg pretend
that they're the same. For years, Trump has spread vile, bigoted hate
speech and dangerous disinformation. When he was an elected official,
social media platforms gave him a wide latitude to disseminate this
harm. But after January 6, they said enough was enough. Now, as we get
closer to the 2024 elections and Twitter has a new owner, Trump's ban from
social media platforms is at stake.
Mark Zuckerberg at Meta and Elon Musk at Twitter must keep
Donald Trump off Facebook and Twitter.

Even without access to mainstream social media platforms, Trump has
continued to lie about the 2020 election results, share propaganda from
white supremacists, and peddle QAnon conspiracy theories. And as the
January 6 committee has made clear, his actions were part of an
intentional, willful effort to hold power and overturn the rightful
election of President Biden.
Now Trump is in the news again, preparing for another presidential run.
Facebook will undoubtedly face pressure to reinstate him as a public
figure, which would open up lucrative advertising revenue streams for
Trump's campaign.
And as for Twitter—Musk has already said that Trump's ban from social
media platforms was a mistake and that he will be "digging in" on lifting
shadow bans.^1 With Twitter under the ownership of the narcissist Musk,
who has himself used the platform to attack Democrats and spread
conspiracies, Trump could get back his megaphone any day.

there are consequences for illegal and violence-inciting behavior, and
that public figures be held accountable for spreading conspiracy theories
and disinformation online. Facebook and Twitter owe it to their own users,
