*PTINs expire soon ? tax pros can renew online for faster processing*
There are more than 750,000 active tax return preparers that must renew their Preparer Tax Identification Numbers now for 2023. *All current PTINs will expire December 31, 2022*.
Anyone who?s paid to prepare or assist in the preparation of all, or a substantial part of any U.S. federal tax return must have a current PTIN from the IRS. This PTIN must be renewed every year. The fee to renew or get a PTIN is $30.75 for 2023. This fee is non-refundable.
*Renewing online is fast and easy*
Tax return preparers with a 2022 PTIN should use the online renewal process [ [link removed] ], which takes about 15 minutes to complete. First-time PTIN applicants can also apply for a PTIN online.
A paper option, Form W-12 [ [link removed] ], along with the instructions [ [link removed] ], is also available for PTIN applications and renewals. The paper form can take four to six weeks to process. Failure to have and use a valid PTIN may result in penalties.
*PTIN system enhancements*
The online PTIN system has a new look and feel for a more optimized preparer experience when renewing or registering for a PTIN. Improvements include:
* *Dynamic application design*. The system dynamically adapts based on the preparer's responses and guides them to the correct application.
* *Mobile responsive and mobile friendly*. The system will adjust to device's screen size.
* *Multi-year renewals and registrations*. Preparers can renew or register for multiple calendar years at one time.
* *Expanded support channel*. Webchat is available to help users with PTIN account questions.
