Five years of conflict in Mosul, Iraq has left the city struggling to rebuild, with many hospitals and communities still recovering. But expecting mothers and their families simply cannot wait. That’s why neonatal and maternal care provided by Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is so vital to the community.
In Iraq and over 25 other countries across the globe, birthing mothers and their families rely on MSF’s specialized care. And when you support MSF’s neonatal care, you’re making an investment in the long-term health of an entire community.
Day-in and day-out, MSF midwives see the positive impact of our work in the neighborhood. Without our maternity center, many mothers in Mosul would not have the means to access quality care. Our team of 35 midwives and supervisors at the maternity center not only assist deliveries but also provide pre- and post-natal care and family planning services.
On average, the staff at MSF’s Al-Amal maternity center assist 10 to 15 deliveries per day and 20 to 25 deliveries on busy days. Through local collaborations and culturally-informed care, we’re improving mortality rates for mothers and babies in Mosul and beyond.
“The birth was difficult, but all went well, and the midwives helped a lot,” says Bouchra, 19, who gave birth to her first child in the Al-Amal maternity center. “I hope I’ll bring other children into the world too. And if I do have other children in the future, I’ll come back here.”
