Trump’s announcement last night to run again for the highest office in the country signals an imminent and disastrous threat for the future of the Boundary Waters. 

John, I don’t want to scare you, but let me remind you about President Trump’s rush to ruin the Boundary Waters during his first term, aided by mining industry cronies such as current U.S. Rep Pete Stauber.

You know by now, despite overwhelming public support for protecting the Wilderness, the chance to pass major laws like a Boundary Waters protection bill just doesn’t come along that often, so we’ve got to win this now, while we still can. The current Senate and House can act to pass the Boundary Waters Permanent Protection Bill during this important window of time before the next Congress is seated in January. 

Trump undid years of progress to protect the Wilderness from copper mining – reinstating old mineral leases, slashing environmental review, and ignoring and even hiding scientific and economic evidence about the risks of copper mining. He used this controversy purely for his own advantage and held political rallies in Minnesota to prop up Boundary Waters enemies like Rep. Stauber – and we know that’s exactly what he’ll do again as a presidential candidate.
