Friend,
As the midterm elections come to a close, Senate Democrats are jumping right into action.
Today, the Senate is set to vote on the Democrat-led Respect for Marriage Act — a bill that protects the right to same-sex marriage, even if the Supreme Court overturns cases like Obergefell v. Hodges.
Earlier this year, the conservative-led Supreme Court voted to strip us of our right to abortion, and we knew they wouldn’t stop there. It was made abundantly clear that they’re coming for our civil rights — including our right to marry.
We have the chance to protect our rights against attacks from far-right Republicans and the Supreme Court. Urge your senators to pass the Respect for Marriage Act.
Here’s how the Respect for Marriage Act plans to protect our right to same-sex marriage:
- Codifies marriage equality under federal law, protecting couples regardless of the state they were married in
- Repeals the antiquated Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which narrowly defined marriage and banned federal recognition of same-sex marriage
- Provides additional legal protections, such as allowing the Attorney General or any individual discriminated against to take legal action
Young voters showed up for Democrats this election cycle, and now they’re showing up for us in Congress. Our generation deserves a country where the LGBTQ+ community can live freely, without looming threats from the far-right. The Respect for Marriage Act gets us one step closer to that.
We all deserve to marry who we love — no matter what the Supreme Court says. Urge your senators to vote YES on the Respect for Marriage Act today.
Thank you,
NextGen America
