This year’s election saw a wave of candidates that echoed former president Trump’s false claim about stolen elections. As Election Day approached, many of us who care about democracy and its norms worried how these candidates would perform. Thankfully, most of them lost, and many accepted their defeat quietly.

There will be many theories as to why they lost. In my latest piece, “Election Deniers Lost, But Will the GOP Change?” I outline my initial thoughts. Simply put, voters became more attuned to the threat of election subversion and pro-democracy voters turned out in record numbers.

But what about next time? Was 2022 the high-water mark for election denier candidates or just a setback for a renewed attack on democracy in 2024? For the immediate future, the GOP is bound to Trump’s false narrative about 2020 and his insistence that the system remains rigged against him. Until that changes, the fight against election denialism will likely need to remain front and center in our politics.
