The One-Minute Meeting

We all knew this day might come, when a missile — maybe a Russian missile — might land in a NATO country — like Poland — and the war in Ukraine might spiral into something larger. A missile landed in Poland, killing two people. Early reports said it came from Russia, but Russia denies it. On Sept. 30, President Joe Biden said, “America’s fully prepared with our NATO allies to defend every single inch of NATO territory. … So, Mr. Putin, don’t misunderstand what I’m saying. Every inch.” The question today will be whether Russia intentionally fired a missile into Poland, whether it was unintentional and what America’s NATO membership requires. I will explore what NATO’s Article 5 says, and how it applies today.

A third union rejected a new contract with the nation’s railroad companies, which raises the chances of a nationwide railroad strike early next month. A third of the nation’s goods move by rail and a national strike would have dramatic consequences, almost certainly reigniting inflation and supply interruptions.

An investigation by CBS-owned TV stations nationwide reports that an alarming number of public school students are being arrested in school. The investigation challenges the notion that having police in schools makes the schools safer. Black students make up half of all arrests in schools but make up only 15% of the student population. I asked the lead reporter for the investigation how he got his data and what other journalists should know to follow up locally.
