Russia’s Largest Missile Strike Against Ukraine Sees Missiles Land in NATO Ally of Poland
Wall Street Journal: Russian forces unleashed a volley of missiles across Ukraine on Tuesday, striking the country’s already beleaguered energy infrastructure and residential buildings in Kyiv days after Moscow suffered a major battlefield setback, government officials said. At least 85 missiles were launched across the country, said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, making it one of the largest waves of strikes since Moscow began a strategy last month of hitting critical infrastructure ahead of the winter freeze (Wall Street Journal). CNBC: It was Russia’s biggest barrage yet, and some of the missiles crossed into Poland, where two people were killed. It marked the first time in the war that Russian weapons have come down on a NATO country (CNBC). Russia denied launching missiles near the Polish border. Jennifer Griffin: From Russian Foreign Ministry: Russian firepower has launched no strikes at the area between Ukrainian–Polish border. The wreckage published by Polish mass media from the scene in Przewodów have no relation to Russian firepower (Twitter).

Kevin McCarthy Earns Nomination from Republicans for House Speaker
Katie Pavlich: House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy passed the first hurdle in his quest to become the next Speaker of the House Tuesday after Republicans voted to make him a nominee for the position. Meanwhile, Republicans haven’t officially locked down the House majority yet, but remaining congressional races and the math will get them there by the end of the week (Townhall). Chad Pergram: McCarthy wins GOP bid for Speaker, 188-31. But is 30 votes shy of what he needs to become Speaker on the flr in January (Twitter). CBS: If elected speaker, McCarthy has pledged to reopen the U.S. Capitol building and end proxy voting, which was approved by Democrats during the COVID-19 pandemic to allow absent lawmakers to have another member cast votes for them. He also vowed to entrust House committees with drafting and marking up bills, and marshal resources to allow the House to conduct oversight of the Biden administration (CBS).

Republican Tom Emmer Elected to House Majority Whip
Hill: House Republicans elected Rep. Tom Emmer (R-Minn.), the chief of their campaign team, to be House majority whip in a closed-door conference vote on Tuesday. The conference separately voted to elect Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.) as majority leader by voice vote. Scalise had been serving as minority whip (Hill). Hugh Hewitt: Sorry to see @RepJimBanks come up a little short. I’m sure he’ll congratulate @tomemmer, go to work for McCarthy/Scalise/Emmer/Stefanik team b/c that’s who Jim Banks is. I still think vets caucus in the House —the future of party in Cold War with CCP— needs some representation (Twitter).

Texas Governor Greg Abbott Declared an “Invasion” at the Southern Border
Washington Examiner: Gov. Greg Abbott declared an “invasion” at the state’s border with Mexico, the first time in modern history that a state has determined the federal government has failed to protect citizens and the state may defend itself. The state self-defense clause outlined in Article 1, Section 10 of the Constitution and the invasion clause in Article 4, Section 4 say that if the federal government fails to protect a state, the governor may take action for the state to protect itself (Washington Examiner). Greg Abbott: I invoked the Invasion Clauses of the U.S. & Texas Constitutions to fully authorize Texas to take unprecedented measures to defend our state against an invasion. I’m using that constitutional authority, & other authorization & Executive Orders to keep our state & country safe (Twitter). PJ Media: The tweet included a list of powers Abbott has in a time of invasion, including the deployment of the National Guard, gun boats, and the Texas Department of Public Safety to “arrest & return” illegal migrants to the border. Abbott can also build “a border wall in multiple counties,” designate Mexican drug cartels as “foreign terrorist organizations,” and even enter into “agreements with foreign powers to enhance border security” (PJ Media).

Biden Administration Considers Extending Student Loan Moratorium
National Review: Following a pair of court rulings blocking President Biden’s student-loan “forgiveness” plan, White House aides are now reportedly making plans to once again extend the federal student-loan repayment moratorium to cushion borrowers from the full cost of their outstanding loans (National Review). PJ Media: But the administration has a problem. The moratorium on student loan debt repayments is set to expire on Jan. 1, 2023. Since it’s highly unlikely that the legality of the program will be determined by then, aides have been scrambling to come up with a justification for extending the payment freeze beyond that date (PJ Media).

Georgia Judge Overturns Heartbeat Bill
Washington Post: A Fulton County judge has overturned Georgia’s six-week abortion ban, ruling that two key parts of the law “were plainly unconstitutional when drafted, voted upon, and enacted” and writing that the law cannot be enforced. The ruling Tuesday by Fulton County Superior Court Judge Robert McBurney stemmed from a lawsuit that argued the state’s “heartbeat bill” violated pregnant people’s rights to liberty and privacy rights under the state constitution (Washington Post). Live Action: An Atlanta county judge just struck down Georgia’s heartbeat law, which protected many children in the state from abortion. This horrific case of judicial activism must be overruled at the higher courts. There is no right to kill children in the US or GA Constitution (Twitter).

Ford Claims EV’s Require 40 Percent Less Labor, Looks to Produce More Parts to Help Save Jobs
Financial Times: Making electric vehicles will require 40 per cent fewer workers than building cars and trucks powered by petrol, the chief executive of Ford has declared, saying the carmaker needs to produce more parts in-house so that “everyone has a role” in the transition. Jim Farley warned on Tuesday of “storm clouds” in the next phase of switching to EVs. His company has set a goal of half of global sales coming from EVs by 2030, part of a broader shift among manufacturers (Financial Times).

FTX Founder’s Empire Comes Crumbling Down
Hot Air: The saga of FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried gets more bizarre and more disturbing, as competing narratives begin to clash. Bankman-Fried rose to prominence as the Democrats’ second-largest campaign donor after George Soros over the past couple of years, as well as the darling of the glitterati who always are taken in by hucksters who promote virtue signaling over basic reality. He was a huge donor to Joe Biden’s campaign in 2020, and continued his giving spree in 2022 through major campaign contributions both to candidates and dark money Super PACs (Hot Air). Jesse Watters: The Democrat Party is in the middle of the biggest financial fraud case in U.S. history (Twitter)! Luke Martin: Ken Griffin, CEO of Citadel, highlighting one of the darkest details of the entire FTX situation. How deep does the rabbit hole go (Twitter)? CNBC: As crypto prices tanked this year, Bankman-Fried bragged that he and his enterprise were immune. But in fact, the sectorwide wipeout hit his operation quite hard. Alameda borrowed money to invest in failing digital asset firms this spring and summer to keep the industry afloat, then reportedly siphoned off FTX customers’ deposits to stave off margin calls and meet immediate debt obligations. A Twitter fight with the CEO of rival exchange Binance pulled the mask off the scheme (CNBC).

World’s Population Grows to Eight Billion People
CBS: The world’s population reached 8 billion on Tuesday, growing by 1 billion in the last dozen years and reflecting the rapid population spike of the past few decades, with India projected to become the world’s most populous country by next year, surpassing China.  The world’s population milestone of 8 billion people has long-term significance for both rich and poor countries. While it took hundreds of thousands of years for the world’s population to reach 1 billion, the world grew from 7 billion to 8 billion just since 2010, a reflection of advancements in health (CBS).
