Adventures in Nature With Sierra Club’s Military Outdoors

Spending time in nature can provide critical therapeutic benefits for veterans, but for many unfamiliar with outdoor recreation it can be an intimidating new endeavor. Sierra Club Military Outdoors Campaign Manager Aaron Leonard recounts one New York outing and the ways the Sierra Club is working to make spending time outdoors more accessible and inviting to veterans across the country. 

Also for Veterans Day, Marine veteran and Sierra Club staffer Brennan Kelly wrote about how the outdoors helped him after he left the military, and veteran Vedia Barnett wrote about how getting outdoors helped her heal after a stroke.

The Nation's Newest National Marine Sanctuary

Pending final approval, the Chumash Heritage National Marine Sanctuary would effectively stretch over half of California’s coastline and would be the first national marine sanctuary in California to be co-managed by Indigenous people.

We can use this marine sanctuary as a way for people to learn more about the ocean and natural resources and also [to learn] how we Indigenous people interact with and understand marine life, Bear Clan elder Michael Khus-Zarate says.

Tell America's Largest Banks: Stay Away From the Rio Grande Valley!

The Big Six Banks—Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Chase, Citibank, Morgan Stanley, and Goldman Sachs—have all made bold statements claiming that they will cease all their financing for fossil fuels. Yet, among them, the Big Six US banks have funded nearly $140 billion in liquefied natural gas since the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement. While we continue to pressure global financial institutions to pull their direct support from these projects, we also need to make sure the major US banks’ fossil fuel projects stay far away from vulnerable communities across the nation, like the Rio Grande Valley.

Stop Texas GulfLink

The Maritime Administration and US Coast Guard published the Supplemental Draft Environmental Impact Statement for the Texas GulfLink, a massive oil export facility proposed in the Texas Coast communities. If built, GulfLink would include a network of new onshore and offshore crude oil pipelines, massive crude oil storage tanks, and an oil export terminal off the coast of Brazoria County, Texas. This will cause unjust and inequitable impacts on Gulf residents, the local environment, and threaten our climate goals. Gulf Coast communities need your support to deny a crucial permit to stop this facility by November 30.
