When we launched EFF’s Atlas of Surveillance (AOS), I could only dream that we’d amass over 10,000 data points on police surveillance tech in just a few years. Thanks to the EFF members who made it possible!
AOS began in 2019 as a crowdsourcing project between EFF and the Reynolds School of Journalism at the University of Nevada, Reno. Working with students, our research uncovered tools like drones, face recognition, cell-site simulators, and license plate readers.
Since then, over a thousand students and ordinary people joined forces to reveal a vast web of local law enforcement surveillance tools. Our searchable database is now the authoritative resource for local and national journalists, academic researchers, policymakers, and grassroots advocates.
This 10,000-point milestone is a big step forward for transparency and community empowerment. But it also reflects the massive growth of surveillance adoption by police agencies. These powerful technologies often gather data on residents, regardless of whether they have a connection to a criminal case. The dangers to privacy are clear.
