Hi John,

As we collectively work toward smart and impactful affordable housing solutions, it is indisputable that housing justice is racial justice.

This is why NPH has prioritized a racial equity focus, working with our members, partners, and other racial equity practitioners to identify our role in advancing racial justice.

After many years of work within NPH and throughout our member organizations to cultivate and deepen our approach to racial equity and inclusion, we've now undergone a reflective process to consider why and how we're approaching this work. The result of this process is Our New Racial Equity Statement.

NPH staff share our new racial equity statement in a short and inspiring video!

Our Commitment NPH has made it our business to learn and listen in our efforts to advance racial equity, and to prioritize diversity and inclusion in our organization, our membership base, and throughout the affordable housing industry.

Our racial equity statement affirms our commitment to not only our work on an organizational level, but to the future we envision for our communities: “a future where every single person lives in a safe, stable, and affordable home – especially our low-income communities and Black, Indigenous, Latino/a/e, Asian, and other communities of color.”

Why Housing Justice Is Racial Justice The stories behind housing are ones of love, family, and togetherness; but they also tell stories of “decades of exclusionary public policies; institutionalized racism; and the shutting out of communities of color from meaningful opportunities to thrive.”

Shamefully, our nation’s history is one predicated on slavery, genocide, and the aftermath of these inhumane harms. And to this day, the side effects reverberate throughout the country and particularly in our housing infrastructure.

This is why NPH embeds racial equity and inclusion into all of our work, aiming to advance racial justice as an organization as well as promote it throughout the broader affordable housing movement, with an ultimate goal of transformation at the structural and societal levels.

Our Journey: NPH’s Racial Equity Programming

In challenging ourselves to be a strong anti-racist organization, NPH launched a racial equity and inclusion initiative in 2017 that builds upon previous work and continues to refine our racial justice goals and focus areas. Key REI programming includes the Bay Area Housing Internship Program (BAHIP); the Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (DEI) Working Group; and the freshly launched Anti-Racist Champions of Change (ARCC) program.

What Can We Do? Together, we can answer the call for housing and racial justice. Learn more about NPH’s commitment to racial equity and our racial equity programming, designed to help transform our organizations and industry. Because it starts with me and you!

Onward,
