Hi Friend, Ruy Teixeira has an interesting theory of what’s wrong with American politics, at least on the left. For years, Democratic strategists have said the party can seek the advantage by turning out more voters from demographics traditionally considered “progressive”—an idea that Teixeira himself popularized two decades ago with his book The Emerging Democratic Majority. But Teixeira now argues that Democrats have lost sight of working-class voters who simply want leaders who have some common sense. In other words, rather than driving up their base, Democrats, he argues, should invest in winning over swing voters. It’s an interesting perspective, and of course one that can be applied to the GOP as well, where far right conservatives have tended to look toward turning out “base” voters rather than reaching to those who sometimes vote red, and other times vote blue. And that’s why we wanted to have Teixeira speak to No Labels. As we pursue the politics of problem solving, we need leaders in both parties to be thinking not only about how to gin up their most committed supporters, but also to do things that engage the frustrated majority of Americans who believe the best ideas are those that can glean support from both parties. We look forward to seeing you on the call! RSVP below to get the zoom link.
