Ready for SBL / AAR

I’m packing my bags for Colorado, ready to attend (for the first time) the jointly held annual meetings of the Society of Biblical Literature (SBL) and the American Academy of Religion (AAR). I don’t know what to expect, but I’m thrilled to connect with so many of our readers and writers. If you’ll be there, please let me know ahead of time—or just stop by the Century’s booth!

Our content this week comes in two categories: books, book, books from our November books issue, and two new pieces about Palestine/Israel. As for books, we have a primer on recommended texts in practical theology, along with a review of Pamela Cooper-White’s book about Christian nationalism. Don’t miss an interview with Orthodox rabbi Hanan Schlesinger—a piece that drew some passionate feedback in the Letters section of our December issue—and an inspiring story about a Palestinian artist who uses tear gas canisters in his art.

The video of the week is about one of our most popular articles of the year. John Burgess, a leading Protestant scholar of Russian Orthodoxy, chats with me about navigating his ongoing friendships with Russian people during the war in Ukraine.

When Israeli settlers meet West Bank Palestinians

“This was the first time that I met Palestinians for real. I was challenged and confused and devastated and undone. The bottom started falling out of my self-perception.” – Hanan Schlesinger

What hope looks like to one Palestinian

“The tear gas canisters have destroyed classrooms, poisoned gardens, and suffocated Palestinians. One morning, as Akram al-Waara walked among the silver canisters, he wondered if he could make something from the thin metal.”

What Christian nationalism is and what to do about it

“Readers who want to look away from the disease that is currently ravaging our body politic, those seeking a diverting beach read or a soothing affirmation of their own biases, will do well to choose a different companion.”
