Nur’s twins were born at only 29 weeks. Concerned for her children’s health, she brought them to Goyalmara Hospital in Bangladesh supported by Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) shortly after giving birth.
There, MSF staff provide specialized, lifesaving care to the neonatal unit’s smallest patients. MSF staff care for premature infants, like Nur’s precious twins, and provide essential care that sets them up for a lifetime of health.
Nur’s family is one of many in over 25 countries such as Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Mozambique, and more that rely on the accessible, high-quality neonatal and maternal care provided by MSF.
Untreated complications during pregnancy or delivery can be fatal to both mother and infant. That’s why, through collaboration of locally hired staff and midwives, our health programs focus on reducing maternal and infant mortality rates with culturally-competent care.
In Cabo Delgado, Mozambique, traditional birth attendants provide maternal and newborn care for over 2,000 families displaced by violent conflict. Atija Bacar is a local traditional birth attendant who’s personally experienced conflict and violence, and who has assisted over 100 women in safely giving birth.
“Some good people helped me to get settled,” says Atija. “Now I can also help pregnant women. I know they need my support.”
MSF’s approach to care through local partnerships ensures a long-lasting impact for communities affected by displacement, natural disasters, and other emergencies. For maternal and neonatal care, that means more positive health outcomes for both mother and baby.
