John,
While most people in the U.S. live paycheck to paycheck—and pay taxes on each of those paychecks—U.S. billionaires got $2 trillion richer during the pandemic, and paid little to no taxes on those wealth gains. This is unacceptable.
Elon Musk, the richest person in America, paid zero dollars in federal income tax in recent years. And, he just used his untaxed fortune to buy Twitter—to control information and further build his power.
But it’s not just Elon Musk. A handful of billionaires spent almost $1 billion to influence this year’s midterm elections. Most of this money went to right-wing causes and far-right Republicans who want to sabotage our elections and take away our freedoms.
Add your name to tell Congress: Pass the Billionaire Minimum Income Tax to tax billionaires on their wealth gains each year. This would ensure that billionaires pay their fair share in taxes and would limit their power and influence in our elections.
Our democracy is based on the principle of one person, one vote… but billionaires are drowning out the voices of everyday people.
Instead of paying their fair share in taxes, billionaires are spending hundreds of millions of dollars—a small fraction of their fortunes—on right-wing candidates and causes to rig our democracy and our tax code at the expense of everyday people.
The Billionaire Minimum Income Tax—proposed by President Biden and introduced in the House—would place a 20% tax on the annual wealth gains of anyone worth $100 million or more. This would raise at least $360 billion over 10 years, which we could use to invest in working-class communities, address the climate crisis, and more.
Please sign now to demand Congress pass the Billionaire Minimum Income Tax.
Billionaires should not have a larger say in our political process than anyone else, and that starts with them paying their fair share in taxes.
Thank you for fighting for a true democracy that works for all of us, not just the wealthy few.
In solidarity,
Rashida
