half of all diabetics worldwide currently cannot access treatment

Dear Friend,
It’s estimated that more than 420 million people around the world live with diabetes—and only about half of people requiring insulin have access to it. Without regular access to insulin, people living with type 1 diabetes could die within days.
The lack of access to insulin in the countries we serve is a crisis—here’s how Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is stepping up to meet the challenge:
In addition to providing expert care in our local and mobile health clinics, MSF provides our diabetes patients with all the tools (insulin, glucose monitors, coolers for insulin storage, and more) and information on how to treat themselves at home—completely free of charge. This saves them much-needed time and money on doctor visits, and helps them stay consistent with their treatment.
MSF is constantly looking for new and innovative ways to ensure people living with diabetes can manage their treatment and store their insulin correctly wherever they are. In 2021, a joint study conducted by MSF and the University of Geneva found that a range of insulins can be stored at warmer temperatures than previously recommended, making adhering to effective treatment easier for people with diabetes who live in places without reliable access to refrigeration.
Just three pharmaceutical companies control 99 percent of the insulin market. Their monopoly keeps prices high, making accessing the medicine simply unaffordable for many people living with diabetes. MSF has called on the World Health Organization to break down barriers to treatment and has demanded transparency from pharmaceutical companies that drive up the cost of lifesaving insulin.
With the help of generous supporters like you, MSF is actively working toward a future in which everyone, everywhere can access the lifesaving care they need—for diabetes and a host of other chronic illnesses.
Friend, this World Diabetes Day, will you stand with us in our commitment to making treatment like insulin accessible to people living with diabetes, wherever they are?
