WIIS Global Welcomes Ruth Mikre, Membership Engagement Manager


Prior to joining WIIS, Ruth Mikre spent the last decade working in association and database management, gaining experience in membership recruitment, retention, and engagement within the transportation and education sectors. She received her M.A. from George Mason University in Global Affairs, specializing in gender and development. As an undergraduate student at Virginia Tech, Ruth earned a B.A. in International Studies specializing in world politics and policies and a B.F.A. in Visual Arts, focusing on painting and photography. Please join us in welcoming Ruth to the WIIS staff!

#SHEcurity Index 2022 Launch Event


On October 27th, WIIS was honored to be part of the launch of the 2022 #SHEcurity Index and report. The report analyzes women’s representation and the broader WPS agenda across four different regions (Middle East and North Africa, Latin America, Africa and Asia). WIIS Fellows Ana Velasco and Dr. Diorella Islas Limiñana authored the report’s chapter on Latin America. WIIS participated in #SHEcurity’s virtual launch event, as part of the Paris Peace Forum, to share the report’s findings and recommendations for advancing women’s representation.

Women Mediators on the Front Lines: Reflections and Recommendations


On October 21st,WIIS Italy, as implementing partner of the United Nations Mediterranean Women Mediators Network, had the pleasure of hosting the side event “Women Mediators on the Front Lines.” The event was within the framework of the Women, Peace and Security week at the United Nations in New York, and was co-hosted with the Permanent Mission of Italy to the United Nations, the Permanent Mission of Morocco to the United Nations, and UN Women.

The event sought to furth increase the visibility of women mediators at the local level and discuss strategies and approaches to addressing challenges by providing concrete recommendations.

The discussion was led by Loredana Teodorescu(President, WIIS Italy), Ouided Bouchamaoui (CEO, Hédi Bouchamaoui Group),Anna Cervi (Former Country Director, Norwegian Refugee Council in Syria),Farida Jaidi (Former Ambassador of Morocco to Sweden)and Irene Fellin(Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Women, Peace and Security, NATO).

Addressing the Gender Gap in International Peace and Security Issues


On November 3rd, WIIS Spain (SWIIS) and the Spanish Association of Women Diplomats held a conversation on developing practical approaches to addressing gender gaps in international peace and security. Spain is a leading country in implementing the Women, Peace, and Security Agenda. At the same time, it is committed to meeting the Sustainable Development Goals and the Action for Peacekeeping+ initiative led by the United Nations. All these initiatives highlight the importance of forging alliances and developing strategies to achieve their objectives, counting on the support of civil society, the private sector, academia, and public institutions.

Women & Leadership: War in the Neighbourhood


In WIIS Brussels’ latest podcast, host Ilana Bet-El(Advisory Board Member) is joined by Salome Samadashvili, (Member of the Parliament, Georgia and Former Ambassador of Georgia to the European Union) and Dovilė Šakalienė, Member of the Parliament, Lithuania and Member, National Security & Defense Committee) for a hard-hitting conversation about dealing with the immediate impact of the war in Ukraine in Lithuania and Georgia. They look back at mistakes made regarding Russia and European security since the end of the Cold War and discuss the possibilities of ending the war.

A Comparative Analysis: Gender Self-Assessment Methodologies Applied in Colombia, Honduras, and Ukraine

Between 2019 and 2021, the National Police services of Colombia, Honduras, and Ukraine undertook Gender Self-Assessments (GSAs) to better understand how gender-related issues impact how police forces function externally and internally. In its latest paper, the Geneva Centre for Security Sector (DCAF) describes the background, methodology, and key principles for conducting a GSA, through a comparative approach between DCAF`S experience in Colombia, Honduras, and Ukraine. This publication also describes lessons learned from GSAs conducted in these three contexts, particularly those having influenced both the process and eventual outcomes. It includes recommendations for pathways to improve gender responsiveness.

Catherine M. Kelleher Fellowship for International Security Studies


The Catherine M. Kelleher Fellowship for International Security Studies supports an exceptional graduate student pursuing their master’s or doctoral degree at the University of Maryland School of Public Policy. Professor Kelleher founded WIIS in 1987, and is also a founding faculty member of the University of Maryland School of Public Policy, where she also founded the Center for International and Security Studies at Maryland (CISSM). Throughout her policy and academic careers, Professor Kelleher has been a champion for women in the field of international security policy. This fellowship is intended to ensure that future generations benefit from the kind of support that she has given to countless people in the field today.

Call for Papers: Legacies of Violence and War


The Journal of Security Studies has issued a call for papers and special issue proposals on the theme of Legacies of Violence and War. They welcome both completed individual papers as well as proposals for special issues/forums exploring a wide range of substantive research questions on the theme of this special call. Special issue proposals are due December 15, 2022. Individual papers (outside any proposed special issue) are due February 15, 2023

Call for Papers: Digital Workshop on Localizing the Women Peace & Security Agenda Across Multiple Governance Challenges


The Global Transformations and Governance Challenges Program at Leiden University will be hosting a digital workshop on January 26-27, 2023. This workshop will bring together scholars working on the implementation of the Women, Peace, and Security Agenda. Participants will be required to present a conference paper related to the topic of ‘Localizing the WPS Agenda’.
